Equipment / Supplies
- 4 quarts of oil (15W-40, diesel oil
- Shell Rotella T4
- Delo 400 LE
- Oil Filter (Universal part #300209)
- Oil Extractor and tubes
- Filter wrench
- Rag, paper towels, or shop towels
- Oil-absorbent pads
- Quart-sized freezer bag
- Two kitchen garbage bags
- One will store the extractor tubes when you are done
- The other will be used for all of the discarded items
- One large garbage bag
- This will be used to store the extractor when you are done
Preparation
- Set up the extractor per directions
- Warm up the engine5-10 minutes
- Just long enough to warm oil, but not to full temp.
Remove old oil
- Place oil pads under the extractor and the end of the oil-change hose
- Remove the cap from oil-change hose, and insert the extractor tube as far down the oil-change hose as possible
- Pump extractor slowly. Oil should start to flow. Ideally you pump enough to create a vacuum, then let it slowly suck the oil out. If the flow slows down or stops, pump some more. On mine, the tube was too small for the heavy oil, so I had to pump continuously to get oil to flow.
- Once you hear air sucking (listen at the end of the oil-change hose where the tube goes in), pump a couple more times to get as much oil as possible.
- Carefully remove the extractor tube and hold the end high to allow the remaining oil to drain into the extractor.
- Put a small garbage bag around the extractor tube, and remove it from the extractor.
- Replace the cap on the oil change hose, and place the hose back in a safe location.
- Remove the extractor and tube from the boat, so you don’t accidentally knock it over later.
Remove oil filter
- Place an oil pad under the filter.
- Use a filter wrench or filter pliers to loosen the filter
- Only turn a fraction of a turn, just enough to loosen. You don’t want oil to come out yet.
- Get a quart-sized freezer bag, and fold the top back an inch.
- This will keep the ziplock clean so you can seal it when done.
- Place the bag over the filter
- Turn filter and bag by hand, while keeping the bag pushed up close to the engine to catch as much of the dripping oil as possible.
- Seal up bag with filter inside, and place in garbage bag
Install new oil filter
- Make sure old rubber seal is not stuck on the engine
- Get a small amount of oil on your finger, and smear it around the rubber seal on the new filter.
- Screw the new filter on and tighten by hand only. Do not use a wrench to tighten.
Fill with new oil
- Add oil via the filler cap on the top of the engine.
- Over fill slightly to compensate for oil that will fill the filter
Check
- Start the engine
- Shut down if no oil pressure within a few seconds
- Run for a couple of minutes
- Stop the engine
- Check oil level and add if needed
- Note oil level for comparison at the next oil level check.
- This will help you learn if you are losing/burning oil
Clean up
- Dispose of the old filter and oil appropriately
