Just after we bought the boat, West Marine was having a sale on dock lines. Since the old lines were pretty crusty, we bought a new set up pretty new lines. In addition to the shorter ones we will use at dock, we also bought a couple of longer one to use as spring lines when needed.
At first, every time we pulled into the slip, we would spend several minutes adjusting lines to try to get our position just right. It was one of our least favorite things to do after a great day sailing.
I finally got the bright idea to mark the lines with rigging tape once we had a position we like. Now when we pull in, it’s a breeze. Just put the tape marking right at the dock cleat and make fast. No fuss at all.
We usually have to replace the tape once or twice per season.
I also learned from one of my sailing mentors that Flemish coils are not a good idea. They look pretty, but they trap moisture and dirt and will speed up the decay of your lines. Now we flake ours out on the dock with a bit of space so they can dry out easily.
