Head faucet and sink

Intro

The old sink in the head was corroded and had detached from the counter. The faucet was also corroded and needed to be replaced.

We decided that we did not want the shower pullout faucet. If we ever feel the need for a shower in the head, we’ll add a separate control and shower head.

Parts

The sink size is pretty specific, so we ordered a replacement from Catalina Direct, along with the drain insert. I needed a 90 degree fitting for the drain, which I ordered from Amazon.

Since we did not need the special pullout faucet, we found a nice looking one on Amazon.

Removal

Getting the old sink out was pretty easy, since it had already detached from the counter. I just removed the drain hose from the through-hull and lifted the whole thing out.

The faucet was a bit harder. The fittings had all corroded, and I had to cut off some of the parts with a Dremel.

Faucet

I figured it would be easiest to install the faucet while the sink was out and I had more access. Mounting it was very straight-forward, and I did the plumbing as part of the overall fresh-water plumbing project.

Sink

The original sink had built-in clamps to hold it to the sink. The newer model had no clamps, so I wasn’t sure how to install it. I called Catalina Direct, and their helpful tech support guy told me to use a silicone adhesive. He said they changed the design because the clamps were a weak point. Seeing as how ours had disintegrated, I’d say that was a good choice.

I decided to use 3M 4200, but I knew I would need some way to clamp the sink down while it cured. I fabricated a wooden frame with a threaded rod that worked pretty well.

I filled the sink edging with 4200, put it in place, then attached the clamp. Once I had it tightened down, I cleaned up the excess sealant that oozed out. I then left it to sit until the next weekend, just to be sure it had cured.

When I came back, I removed the clamp, and the sink was nice and solid.

Drain

The drain fitting that came from Catalina Direct pointed straight down. In order to clear the TP holder and other plumbing, I ordered a 90 degree version to use instead. I put in new hose to the through-hull while I was at it.

Final result

The end result turned out pretty nice. A big improvement over the old mess.
